| WOMEN’S DERMATOLOGIC SOCIETY MEMBERS SPREAD SUN SAFETY EDUCATION IN SAN DIMAS, CA TO THOUSANDS OF FAMILIES AND STUDENTS Families at the LA’s Best After School Program during their family day at the park receive free sunscreen, educational materials and skin cancer screenings, including many first-timers. | | Peter Connolly gets help setting up samples from students at Raging Waters Amusement Park in San Dimas, CA | | (May 9, 2006San Dimas, CA) On Sunday, May 7th, the Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS) partnered up with the LA’s Best After School Program on a “Sun Safety Awareness Day” at Raging Waters Amusement Park in San Dimas, CA. As part of the WDS award-winning national community service outreach, "Families Play Safe in the Sun", the local volunteer dermatologists completed a great day of outreach and provided sun safety education to the 8000 kids, parents and school officials of LA’s Best After School Program during their family day at the park. A committed group of volunteers did an amazing job including: - Handing out over 9000 sunscreen samples
- Handing out 3000 UV Bracelets
- Distributing Numerous educational materials
- Conducted 300 DermaScan assessments
- Took 250 UV photos
- Performed 36 skin cancer screenings
Volunteers in attendance included: Dr. Lenore Kakita, Dr. Suzanne Connolly and her husband Peter, Dr. Maryam Moinfar, Dr. Gwen Iwasaki and her two daughters Julie and Lisa, and two medical students Wendi Benalt and Stefani Kappel. Dr. Anna Guanche assisted with media interviews the day prior to the event.
