(April 13, 2009Charleston, SC)-- At a time when skin cancer is still the nation's most common form of cancer and melanoma rates in younger females are on the upswing, a team of South Carolina physicians representing the Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS) will provide free skin cancer screenings and sun safety education at the Family Circle Cup, on Saturday, April 18, 2009, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Led by board-certified dermatologist Marguerite Germain, MD, (Mt. Pleasant, SC), local volunteers will conduct the outreach in the WDS tent at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island, SC.
This event is part of Play Safe in the Sun, a 3-year community outreach campaign presented by WDS in collaborative partnership with L'Oréal USA. This volunteer program draws from the organization's 1,600 members to promote sun safety among outdoor sports enthusiasts. Michel McDonald, MD (Nashville, TN) and Adrienne Stewart, MD (Denver, CO) lead the WDS Service Committee, which oversees this campaign.
